The Last Invasion Tapestry gallery in Fishguard attracted more than 50 extra visitors over the Easter weekend.

The gallery was open on Good Friday and Bank Holiday Monday as well as the usual Easter Saturday.

It follows new arrangements made by Pembrokeshire County Council, the Last Invasion Trust, and Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council for volunteers to staff the gallery.

Normally it is run by staff from Fishguard Library, which is adjacent to the Tapestry within Fishguard Town Hall.

However, libraries are traditionally closed on Bank Holidays, so the Last Invasion Trust provided two volunteers on each day to enable the attraction to stay open. Training was given by the County Council.

The County Council’s Information Centre was also open, and Tapestry merchandise was available for purchase.

Cllr Elwyn Morse, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said new arrangements were ‘off to a great start’.

“The Last Invasion Tapestry is a key attraction for Fishguard and together with the Last Invasion Trust and the Town Council, we are very keen for the gallery to remain open on Bank Holidays,” he said.

“We are grateful to the volunteers for enabling this to happen.”

Julie Coggins, Chair of the Trust and one of the volunteers, said: “This year, we have actively tried to allow the gallery to be open on the Bank Holidays, and it has been well worth it.”

The Tapestry will open on the Bank Holidays on May 4th, May 25th and August 31st this year.

Fishguard library will also open on May 25th and August 31st to coincide with the local music events Fishguard Folk Festival and Aberjazz.

The Last Invasion Tapestry is a stunning 30-metre award-winning tapestry which tells the story of the Last Invasion of Britain, which took place near Fishguard in 1797. It was produced to mark the 1997 bicentenary of the event.
