Pupils at Ysgol Penygaer in Llanelli have been commemorating the Holocaust.

This year has seen the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and will also see the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia. The theme for these major anniversaries was focusing on memory.

Carmarthenshire Communities First took this idea and inspired the children and young people of Ysgol Penygaer to create their own representation of ‘keeping the memory alive’ by putting themselves in the shoes of a child during the Holocaust. Pupils were encouraged to think about the importance of memory and were given an opportunity to reflect on their own significant memories by creating memory boxes which were significant and reflected their life to date.

Family Learning Worker Emma Wood said: “It was a great opportunity for the pupils to reflect on their own memories and share these with their peers. I feel the group have gained immense respect for those people who suffered during the Holocaust.”
