MOTORISTS in Carmarthenshire are being urged to keep their car and its contents secure over Christmas and the New Year.
The Community Safety Partnershipās Acquisitive Crime Action Group, which has representatives from the police, fire and rescue service and Carmarthenshire County Council, has discussed what motorists can do to reduce the risk of theft of or from their vehicles.
Inspector Eric Evans of Dyfed Powys Police said: āHalf of all vehicle thefts are thefts from unattended vehicles and a fifth of those vehicles were insecure. There is an onus on vehicle owners to keep their car secure.ā
Motorists are advised to keep their car in the garage if they have one, or on the driveway. If they donāt have a driveway they should park on a well-lit area of street.
Make sure all windows are closed and doors locked, and do not leave the Sat Nav on the screen. Do not leave shopping in sight. When out park in well-lit areas or safer car parks.
Carmarthenshire County Council executive board member for community safety Cllr Pam Palmer said: āWe would urge people to put their Christmas presents out of sight in the boot and not leave them on display in the car where they would be vulnerable to theft.ā
