Llanelli hurdler David Greene is the hero of the Town after powering his way to gold in the European Athletics Championships. The 24-year-old former Coedcae Comprehensive School pupil was cheered on in Barcelona by supporters in the crowd including his parents Steve and Susan.

The trip was worth it as they watched their son take first place in the 400metre hurdles final and there were joyous celebrations in the Greene family home in Llanelli, where David’s younger brothers, Darren and Stephen, followed the race with their hearts in their mouths.

“It was a bit unreal, watching him on the TV, my heart was racing & I was very nervous.” said Darren.

“But he deserved it because he has worked very hard for this. He has worked for years and trains every day. When he first started out it was particularly hard and my father had to take him everywhere. Now it has all paid off.

“He’s due back next week, but there won’t be a family celebration just yet because the season is not finished yet. I’m sure there will be something later on, though.”

Darren also said the family had received a lot of support from the people of Llanelli.

“Everybody has been talking about him,” he said. “Everybody was asking when he was racing. There has been a real buzz about it.”

Speaking just after his gold-winning performance, David said: “It was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before, there are so many British and Welsh flags out there and there’s great support, it really does make a difference.

“It was pure relief (as I crossed the line), there was a lot of expectation and there’s no better feeling than delivering on the day.

“I couldn’t hold back the emotion, I just felt like breaking down in tears.”
