Every woman aged between 50 and 70 who lives in the Glanymor & Tyisha Communities First area will receive a FREE invitation for an NHS breast screening test over the next few weeks.

The test, which takes just a few minutes, looks for early signs of breast cancer and could – quite literally – save your life.  More than 7,000 women throughout the Llanelli area are being offered the test by Breast Test Wales, which has sited one of its mobile units at Morrison’s car park.  All women aged between 50 and 70 should receive an invitation through the post if they are registered with a local family doctor.

Women aged over 70 will not receive an invitation but can be screened on request by telephoning Breast Test Wales on Swansea (01792) 459988.  Alison Clement, a Screening Promotion Officer with Breast Test Wales commented: “I would like to encourage all women over 50 who live in the Glanymor and Tyisha Communities First area to take up the offer of free testing. One in nine women in the UK have a lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, so early detection is vital.

“Screening using breast x-rays called mammograms can detect changes in the breast at an early stage, before symptoms such as a lump, can be seen or felt. And if we find breast cancer at an early stage, then the treatment has the best chance of being successful.

“Women under 50 are not offered routine screening but should be ‘Breast Aware’ and see their doctor without delay if they are concerned about any changes.”
