The General Pharmaceutical Councils want your views!
The draft standards for the education and training of pharmacists propose putting a greater emphasis on education training which is outcome focused and seeks to concentrate on those things students and trainees will have to know and do once they qualify and practise. It is vital that the new education standards are reflective of future developments and are contributing to the future fitness to practise of our registrants and we are keen to hear feedback from all organisations and individuals with an interest in education and training including pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy schools as well as individual patients and their carers, other healthcare professionals as well as members of the public.†The consultation document emphasises the importance of integrating science into pharmacy practice, placing a greater emphasis on the importance of timely assessment and feedback and increasing the amount of clinical work in the course.
The consultation document on course accreditation considers core accreditation methodology for MPharm degrees delivered in Great Britain. The purpose of the consultation, which is aimed both at pharmacy schools and those with an interest in pharmacy education, including employers, is seeking feedback on proposed revisions to methodology which moves towards greater emphasis on the quality of the course, as well as considering the content.
“The new standards reflect a modern approach to the regulation of healthcare education, which makes patient safety a central concern including a requirement for effective systems to be in place to support students and trainees and assurance of fitness to practise. The standards include a requirement for inter-professional working to reflect the complex way in which pharmacists work now. We have deliberately emphasised effective assessment and timely feedback in the standards because there is so much evidence to suggest that they enhance student learning.â€
