Election Views; What are they going to do for Llanelli? – Helen Mary Jones
Recently we contacted all the parties involved in the current Welsh Assembly election with some questions regarding thier party’s plans for the town. Here is the reply from Helen Mary Jones, Plaid Cymru Party candidate for Llanelli.
1) What is your party going to do for Llanelli?
Plaid has four clear priorities in this election. A Plaid government will prioritise a stronger economy and better skills for the Welsh workforce. We’ll ensure our children leave school with the education they deserve, able to read and write to a high standard. We’ll give you the right to see a doctor or a dentist when you need to and we’ll transform our NHS into a community health and wellbeing service, ready to meet the needs of modern Wales. Plaid in government will build a 21st century technology infrastructure with high speed internet and proper mobile phone coverage across the whole of Wales. These are our key campaign priorities for the coming election. Plaid wants to build a better Wales – and we can do this through building a better economy, health, education and communications system.
2) What are you going to do for Llanelli?
In 2007, Plaid ensured that hospitals across Wales were protected from closure, including Prince Philip Hospital, for which Plaid Cymru has secured £17 million of funding. Four years later, with leaked documents discussing the possible closure of Prince Philip Hospital’s A&E unit, I am once again standing up for local hospital services in Llanelli. We are going to make sure that district general hospitals are safeguarded for the people of Llanelli.
We’ll also make sure that our GPs, dentists, pharmacists and specialists serve your needs, and those of your family and community – we’ll make services more accessible and more responsive to Welsh patients. With Plaid in government, you’ll be able to see a doctor when you need to. We’ll also increase the availability of urgent out-of-hours services across Wales to make sure that when you need quick and effective healthcare, it’s there for you.
3) Where do you like to spend time in Llanelli?
I’ve was first elected AM for Llanelli in 1999, re-elected in 2003 as a regional list member for Mid and West Wales, and in 2007, once again became the Plaid AM for Llanelli. When I’m not spending time at our Plaid Cymru office in Llanelli town centre, I love to relax at home in Trimsaran, with my daughter Catrin. I also enjoy swimming, reading and gardening.
