Top Chefs to open Llanelli restaurant backed by Welsh rugby stars

Top Chefs Sian Rees and Ian Wood, who met while working together at Terence Conran’s Orrery restaurant, are to open a 100-cover restaurant on Llanelli Waterside.

Called Sosban, the restaurant will see Rees take on the role of head chef, while Wood, who is currently head chef of Boundary, in London, will be general manager.

Due to open in June, the restaurant is located in a newly refurbished Grade II-listed pump house that once provided hydraulic power for the neighbouring dock.

It is being backed by Bendigo 910, whose directors include broadcaster and former AA Restaurant Guide editor Simon Wright, together with Welsh international rugby players Stephen Jones and Dwayne Peel and Carmarthenshire businessman Robert Williams.

Wright said: “We’re delighted to have two such talented and committed people joining us. Both Sian and Ian are hugely experienced, having been in the top job at some of London’s best restaurants.”

For Rees this is something of a homecoming as her family home is in Kidwelly just a few miles from Sosban’s Llanelli Waterside location and her catering education took place at nearby Coleg Sir Gar.

“My 10 years in London were an incredible experience and the past few years as head chef at Galvin Bistro Deluxe were terrifically rewarding,” Rees said. “Now it’s good to be coming back to Wales and I’m looking forward to being able to work with the wonderful produce that the country has to offer.”
