Wales Volunteer of the Year Awards 2011

Adult category – Joanne Yeo, Llanelli

A mother-of-three who has taken on a ‘vast array’ of voluntary work, Joanne Yeo has made an ‘unbelievable difference’ to the lives of many in her community of Seaside, Llanelli.

The 36-year-old Secretary of the Glanymor and Tyisha Safer Communities Action Group also helps out in the classroom and playground – as well as organising events – at Copperworks Infants’ School, works with other schools on projects including cyber bullying and road safety, and helps organise the local carnival and Christmas celebrations.

‘Some of the work she is involved in creates opportunities for people on low incomes while her other activities promote inclusion and participation, including intergenerational work to reduce the potential conflict between differing members of the community,’ said Joanne’s nominator, local resident Maria Austin.

Her dedication to creating a safer community has led to a reduction in and fear of crime in the community. Through fundraising and funding applications, she has secured resources to the value of more than £30,000 for local groups.

‘Joanne has incredible organisational skills, juggling the volunteer work with family life. Her only fault is that she can’t say no to anyone who wants help!’ Maria added.

‘Joanne deserves special recognition because she puts in a tremendous amount of effort while seeking no reward other than the betterment of her local community for all. Through her passion, commitment and drive, I’m proud to say that she makes an unbelievable difference to the lives of many in our community – and beyond.’

Joanne said she was proud to receive an award when there were ‘so many other deserving individuals within our community’.

She added: ‘I’ve lived in Seaside my whole life and have become a bit of a “serial volunteer”! How can I say no to projects and events when I can see the benefits and difference it makes to the whole community?

‘I wholeheartedly love the work I do and would not be able to do anything without the love and support of my family – from my husband who is always 100% behind everything I do to my children, who have caught the volunteering bug from me!’
