New Projects at The Lighthouse
“Helping people overcome barriers to gain employment”
The Lighthouse is a one-stop shop for people who are unemployed. We know first-hand the difficulties they have, in sourcing and accessing the right advice, guidance, support and training required and we help to break down any barriers people face in gaining employment.
We have recently launched two new projects funded by the engagement gateway fund which is supported by the European Social Fund and administered by WCVA. Both programmes welcome anybody aged between 16 – 65 who are currently not working.
The first is called Step by Step and is aimed at those people who find it hard to even contemplate being able to work. It may be that they have had a long period of incapacity or sickness; they may feel depressed or feel that they have little to offer an employer. They may have had personal or family responsibilities or issues that have prevented them from working. We invite them to come along at any time to talk to our staff over a cup of coffee. They might like to come along to one of our friendly sessions aimed at getting people out of the house and meeting other people in a similar position. They may like to join others to cook and eat a nourishing lunch or grow plants in containers to keep at home and to cheer up our premises.
Our staff can advise them of helpful organisations that can help sort out any problems, such as debt management or health issues etc. should this be needed.
The second programme is called “Moving Forward” and is aimed at those people who are nearly ready to start the process of getting back to work but need to build up their confidence and motivation or perhaps need to find out what sort of work would suit them best and need some help in knowing what to do next. We can offer a variety of support according to individual needs and can also introduce people to other useful organisation that can help them.

Individuals can attend for as few or as many hours a week as they want to and attendance is purely on a voluntary basis. We hope that by attending the sessions on offer, on either of the programmes, people will enjoy talking to other and feel some benefits from coming along. They may even want to learn more, join full time programmes or perhaps even apply for and get jobs eventually.
We are able to offer a wide variety of services and there is real flexibility within these programmes.
We also have Work Options at The Lighthouse. Work Options is a service for unemployed adults who are “confused” or unsure of what types of work may be suitable for them. This would be particularly useful for people who have been long term unemployed, or those who have been made redundant and are not able to gain similar types of work. Work Options uses an individual’s work-related interests, skills, and desired occupation level to identify suitable careers with a detailed report being given at the end of the session, containing the top three matches and an action plan to support the next step in their career.
Work Options works by answering a few simple multiple choice questions on the type of activities or environment you’d like to work in etc., the programme matches people to a suitable career depending on their answers. Once matched you can search the full details on the careers matched such as work activities, pay opportunities and information on entry routes and training. Work Options will only take an hour of the client’s time to complete and they will receive a report to take away with them.
If you have any further questions or would like to have an informal chat with one of our support workers please feel free to contact us on either: 01554 700351, lighthouse.llanelli@gmail.com or drop into The Lighthouse.
