Local people transform their community

Emma Davies and Hannah Oliver set up a community group in Danybanc and Llundain Fach to try and encourage residents to take part in events and activities, and to learn new skills.

Since starting last summer, they have organised numerous things such as yoga classes, children’s events, family barbecues and trips to attractions like Oakwood and Pembrey Country Park.

They have been supported by Communities First Felinfoel who have helped them access funding,  provided help and guidance and access to courses at the Community Centre.

Emma said: “The area didn’t have a very good reputation but it’s really changed.  The police used to be here all the time but we don’t see them any more except for PC Steve Kettle who works with us in our group. There is more of a community feel about the area, people are getting to know each other better and are getting on.”

Children in the area have been involved in a number of activities and outings, and have taken part in developing the community projects. The next big project is improvements to the park. Mum of five Hannah has taken computer courses which she hopes will help her get back into work. She said: “It has made a really big difference to my life and to my children.”

Emma and Hannah are happy to share their experience and give advice to anyone who wants to set up a community group in their area. Contact Emma on 01554 750949.
