Hockey girls stick to a coaching course

FORTY girls from all over Carmarthenshire joined a hockey umpiring workshop at The Barn, Parc Y Scarlets.

The first steps to umpiring course was led by Jen Barton from Hockey Wales with support from Carmarthenshire County Council’s sports development team.

The 40 youngsters were represented by Carmarthenshire Hockey Clubs Dinefwr A’r Fro, based at Ammanford; Tywi Teigrod from Llandeilo and the Llanelli team.

County hockey development officer Rae Ellis said the workshop was specifically designed for their junior hockey players.

She said: “It means that when these junior clubs meet as they do once monthly in the Carmarthenshire Hockey development Centre they will take ownership of umpiring matches played within the league.”

In the monthly league both the Under 13’s and Under 15’s are catered for.

County executive board member for leisure services Clive Scourfield said: “So much unheralded good work goes on for our youngsters across the county.

“The sports development teams continue to deliver despite swingeing cuts across the service and they are to be commended for their efforts.”
