Recognising the work of special constables

The Annual Awards Ceremony that recognises the contribution made by Special Constables in Wales was this year hosted by Dyfed Powys Police, and was recently held at Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon.

The four Welsh Police Forces took part in the event with nominations in two award categories, namely the Harry King Individual Award and the All Wales Team Award.

The winner of the individual award was Special Constable Oliver West from Dyfed Powys, with the team award being won by Special Inspectors from Gwent.

Deputy Chief Constable Jackie Roberts of Dyfed Powys Police who attended the ceremony

congratulated the winners and said, ‘The award winners show the very best in achieving performance excellence and these represent the many examples of outstanding work done by Special Constables across the country on a day-to-day basis.’

‘The police service is extremely fortunate to have so many Special Constables who enthusiastically work in their own time to serve their communities, and I have immense appreciation and admiration for the work they do.’

Each force outlined the work undertaken by each nominee prior to the winners being announced.

Sergeant Mark McSweeny who outlined the case for Oliver West, “Olly is an enthusiastic, professional constable. His commitment, leadership and initiative are admirable. Olly has a full time job, and I am always amazed to see him with us on his rest days. Between January and August this year Olly has worked many hours as a Special Constable in Carmarthenshire and made eight arrests.

“Olly regularly assists officers with enquiries as well as leading operations with other Special Constables. I have also patrolled with Olly several times and I was extremely impressed by the way that he interacted with people; he remained calm, courteous and professional during difficult circumstances. He is a worthy winner and a credit to the Special Constabulary.”
