A Christmas message from Llety Llanelli Foyer Young Persons Committee

Llanelli Foyer, which occupies the big glass-fronted building in Station Road, is a supported housing project for young people aged 16-25 who wish to make positive choices in their lives in terms of education, training or employment.

LLFYPC was formed in July 2010 with the aim of increasing the skills and self confidence of project participants and enhancing the reputation of the foyer within the wider community.

This year has seen our group complete a sustainable garden at the rear of the foyer, raising funds by undertaking a sponsored walk in the Brecon Beacons and holding a cake sale at Asda. We were also supported with a grant from the Foyer Federation, and received donations from Tata Steel and Llanelli Town Council.

The centrepiece of the garden is a bottle greenhouse, made from 1500 recycled plastic bottles. We have also put in a shed, a masonry BBQ, raised beds for flowers and vegetables and some stone seating, covered in mosaic tiles. In August we entered and won a garden competition organised by Gwalia Housing and were also recognised by TPAS Cymru.

Our group is becoming well known in the community, especially for our filming. We completed a short film on green issues and recycling in the spring and are currently making a film about the town. It’s called Ghosts and Spirit: Llanelli Past Present and Future, and looks at the rise and fall of Llanelli as an industrial power house and its future as a tourist an leisure destination.

We would like to extend Christmas greetings to all those, too numerous to mention, who have helped with the film so far, and invite any one who wishes to contribute their ideas or memories to contact the committee in the New Year. To arrange a visit or find out more about what we do, telephone 01554 771293.
