Llanelli AM backs Welsh Language Scheme Ultimatum
Llanelli Assembly Member Keith Davies has backed the “tough and quick action” by Welsh Labour’s Minister for Education and Skills on a long running dispute between Ofcom and the Welsh Language Board on the former’s Welsh Language Scheme.
Leighton Andrews today requested that both parties reach an agreement on the terms of Ofcom’s Welsh language scheme within one month.
Keith Davies today accused Plaid’s former Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones of putting the issue in the “too difficult” box after the Llanelli Assembly received a timescale of events showing Alun Ffred Jones failed to act on the issue.
Llanelli Assembly Member, Keith Davies said:
“I welcome the Education Minister’s announcement today. The correspondence I have received shows that Plaid’s former Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones did nothing on this matter other than put it in the “too difficult” box and ignore the issue.
“Despite repeated pleas from the Welsh Language Board’s Chair Meri Huws for the former minister to exercise his powers, he did little other than “consider internally” for over a year.
“This is in contrast to Leighton Andrews’ tough and quick action that shows Welsh Labour is the true party of the Welsh Language.
“I hope that Ofcom and the Welsh Language Board can reach an agreement within the next month or I’m sure the Minister will take further action.”
