Cyngor 50+ Advice

CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council’s Older People’s Champion will open the launch of a new advice project.

Cllr Kevin Madge, who is also deputy leader of the council, will attend the launch of Shelter Cymru’s new project Cyngor 50+ Advice next Tuesday (March 13) at Carmarthen Leisure Centre.

The, which has received three years funding from the Big Lottery Fund AdvantAGE programme, aims to help people aged over 50 to avoid homelessness and/or improve their housing conditions.

It will provide information about housing, welfare benefits and money management, advice and advocacy. Volunteers, or peer workers, will hold information sessions around the county to ensure people have access to the information and support they need.

The peer workers will be given accredited training increasing their skills and confidence for future employment, business or community activities.

Project co-ordinator Kelly White said: “Housing issues facing older people include poorly-maintained homes, low incomes, fuel poverty, maintaining independence, home too large or too small and landlord issues.”

Cllr Kevin Madge said: “I welcome the Cyngor 50+ Advice project which will provide valuable advice and support to older people with housing issues.”
