Free First Aid Skills for Unemployed Parents in Llanelli

St John Wales has launched a scheme to equip economically inactive parents in Carmarthenshire with lifesaving first aid skills.

The charity is offering free first aid taster sessions at schools in the area thanks to funding from the Welsh Government and European Structural Funds (European Social Fund).

Parents will be given an introduction to first aid in the home including training on choking, bleeding, febrile convulsions and asthma. All courses are certified and will be held during school hours.

The next training session will be taking place at 12.30pm on March 29th at Pen-y-gaer Primary School in Llanelli.

Parents attending the courses can enhance their employability through a variety of volunteering roles with the first aid charity and their children can also benefit from joining St John Wales’ Badger and Cadet groups.

St John Wales has six divisions in Carmarthenshire; Llanelli, Carmarthen, Ammanford, Llandeilio, Llandovery and the marine based St John centre in Ferryside.

St John Wales’ Carmarthenshire Project Manager, Eryl Daniels, said: “These free courses will help improve people’s skills and confidence and we hope by learning more about St John they will want to volunteer and they too can meet new people, gain qualifications and give something back to the community.

“Participants can do as little or as much as they want. They can become a volunteer, a leader, press officer, administrative officer or fundraiser. It’s not all about first aid!”
