Sainsbury’s planned for County Towns

PLANS for Sainsbury’s supermarkets in Llandeilo and Cross Hands have been recommended for approval by Carmarthenshire planners.

But proposals for a supermarket in Ammanford have been turned down by the county council planning committee today.

The plans for Llandeilo and Cross Hands will now go to the Welsh Government to be considered under the Shopping Directive because of the combined scale of the plans.

The planning committee was told that members needed to consider not only the individual applications but the cumulative impact of the developments.

The Llandeilo scheme is for a Sainsbury’s supermarket on land between the A40 trunk road and the Beechwood Industrial Estate in Rhosmaen on the northern outskirts of Llandeilo.

The application also includes a customer car park, petrol filling station and associated development.

The Sainsbury’s supermarket planned for land at Cross Hands West is part of a larger development along with residential development, and other facilities.

The outline planning application for Foundry Road, Ammanford, was for a retail foodstore and petrol filling station on land between the A474 Foundry Road and the River Amman. An officers’ report said that the application should be refused on the grounds of flood risk and retail viability.
