First Minister launches new road project

First Minister Carwyn Jones today officially launched the commencement of work on the A477 St Clears to Red Roses road in Carmarthenshire. As well as helping to ease congestion in the area the £56.7 million project will also enhance safety for users.

During his visit the First Minister emphasised the importance of improving Wales’ transport infrastructure:

“Over the past few months we have invested nearly £80 million in improving our country’s roads. Transport is vital to our everyday lives and is crucial to support the economic growth of Wales. That is the reason we’re putting considerable investment into schemes that will deliver our vision of a modern and sustainable transport system.

“In addition the development of these schemes provide a direct boost to the local economy by providing local employment and training opportunities during construction.”

The new road will ensure an easier flow for east-west traffic resulting in a better quality of life for those communities through reduced traffic noise, improved safety and air quality.

The new road will be constructed for the Welsh Government by SRB Civil Engineering. The work began a few weeks ago with completion date expected in 2014.
