Thought for the week from the Rev David Jones (we 22nd April 2012)

The cost of postage stamps are soon to go up and supplies have been running low.

The post office tell us that the increase is essential to maintain the postal service as the Royal Mail deliveres over 16 billion letters to around 28 million addresses every year in the UK.

Time will tell whether these increases will affect the number of letters posted as computerised mail provides a quicker and more economical means of communication; and who would have imagined that ‘texting’ could become a credible threat to the trusted letter?

Will this be the final straw for the posted letter ?– probably not – there’s nothing quite like writing a letter or card and posing it as millions of us do every year.

Letter writing was considered an art in its day and very much part of this was addressing the envelope with care and ensuring that the stamp was correctly placed.

How many letters and cards have been kept and treasured by friends and lovers who were separated by circumstances and miles and who gave expression of their deepest feelings and desires in what they wrote?

The Bible has ‘Epistles’ or letters written by the Apostles which expressed their faith to the emerging churches.

Traditions of communication may change and yet the essential need to express and share will always remain. God’s message to us in the Bible – his stamp is on every page of Scripture, communicating love and forgiveness to us all – Priceless and without cost
