Direction to Leave!

Dyfed-Powys Police is continuing to crack down on alcohol-fuelled violent behaviour with the innovative Section 27 Direction to Leave Powers.

The Violent Crime Reduction Act law enables Police Officers to issue a direction to an individual – aged 16 or over – to leave a public place for 48 hours if the Officer believes the likelihood of a crime or alcohol-related disturbance will take place.

If the offender refuses to leave, or breaches the order and returns to the area within the specified time, is guilty of an offence and could be liable for an arrest and possible conviction, to a fine of up to £2,500.

The Direction to Leave will not interfere or prevent the person from access to where they live, work, and place of education, receive treatment or attend court or tribunal. Although there is no route to appeal an order, they can be rescinded or amended by an Inspector rank or above.

Cardigan Inspector Louise Bradshaw said: “Leading up to the busy summer period this tool will enable our officers to stop public order offences from escalating. Violence and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and this law will ensure that the majority of people who are responsible can enjoy themselves in safety.”
