Olympic Torch celebration event
A free family event is taking place at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig campus on the morning of Sunday 27 May to coincide with the torch relay arriving in Carmarthenshire.
The college and Carmarthenshire County Council Sports Development team have joined forces with local sports clubs to offer ‘have a go’ events in a range of activities for the public including a fun run, touch rugby, hockey, zumba, football, athletics, basketball and a climbing wall. Demonstrations are also being given by Llanelli Gymnastics Club, Bynea Cycling Club and the college dance academy. Also attending is Fusion Health and Fitness to offer fitness testing and advice.
“We’re very excited about the torch relay,” said Stephen Williams, Coleg Sir Gâr assistant curriculum head. “We’re extending an open invitation to the public to help us celebrate and join in some preliminary Olympic celebrations.
“As host country, it gives people the opportunity of seeing the torch which could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Allison Rees, sports development manager for Carmarthenshire is encouraging the public to join in the celebrations. She said: “A number of local sports clubs will be offering activities for all, so there’ll be plenty to do before and after the torch passes through.
“We are encouraging people to come along and participate or watch some demonstrations and find out more about the excellent opportunities provided by our sports clubs.”
The Olympic torch will arrive on Sandy Road at approximately 9.35am and to celebrate its arrival, the event at the Graig campus will be open to the public from 8.30am-11am. Those travelling by road are being urged to arrive early to avoid delays caused by traffic control. For further details, go to colegsirgar.ac.uk
