Pub of the Week

CARMARTHENSHIRE pubs are being given a chance to let visitors know the welcome that awaits them.

The county council is preparing to launch a Pub of the Week campaign to give the best pubs in Carmarthenshire the chance to set out their stall.

The council’s tourism section came up with the campaign after looking at how to best to channel Carmarthenshire’s diverse range of pubs into helping to get visitors to Carmarthenshire and into making sure visitors get the experience they desire when they are here.

From the week of June 11, the county council is funding a new promotion with Radio Carmarthenshire and Scarlet FM to identify pubs from across the whole of Carmarthenshire that can become Carmarthenshire Pub of the Week.

This will give them free on-air promotion, inclusion in the pubs / food drink feature on www.discovercarmarthenshire.com and other leaflets and tourism promotions as well as communication to the county council’s 9,500 employees.

The council’s marketing and tourism manager Huw Parsons said: “About 37 per cent of the money visitors spend in Carmarthenshire is spent on food and drink. This amounts to about £100m and it is a vital element of the tourism economy.

“It is important that we make sure visitors know about the diverse range of pubs we have in Carmarthenshire offering good food and drink.

“Each pub will be reviewed beforehand based on set criteria and their willingness to become proactive parts of the tourism offering in their areas. The campaign will offer our county’s best pubs to show visitors and residents just what they have to offer.”

George Rashbrook, landlord of the Black Lion in Abergorlech, said: “Pubs have so much variety and personality based on location, history and local attractions, that getting noticed and understood for what you stand for is much needed.

“This promotion is a great way to communicate this, and it is fabulous to see the support from the county council helping to introduce new customers and driving our business forwards.”
