Thought for the week from the Rev David Jones (we 27th May 2012)

The Olympic torch will pass through Llanelli on Sunday, a truly once in a life time experience for most of us.

Over ninety percent of the population of the United Kingdom will be less than ten miles from the torch as it makes its way to the Olympic Stadium; bringing some excitement and anticipation of the games which will , hopefully, bring a welcome change to the doom and glow which surrounds these days of so called austerity.

That the torch arrives in Llanelli on Pentecost Sunday is of course a coincidence, but what a good one! The message of Pentecost is everything to do with power and light with fire descending upon the Apostles and the birth of the Christian church.

Those flames of the day of Pentecost symbolised the coming the Holy Spirit which empowered the awaiting Apostles and enabled them to fulfil the commission Jesus made that they would be witnesses to him to the ends of the earth.

The Olympic flame will, of course, be extinguished once the games are over. The power of the Holy Spirit given to at Pentecost is forever – He is the enabler, the comforter, giving glory to the Christ who came to save the people from their sins while also empowering his people through the ages to to serve and rejoice in God’s love.

Jesus is with us and the light of his love is there for us all. Through the presence His Spirit we will find peace and comfort and the eternal friendship of God who in Jesus leads us through the darkness to the light and joy of God’s eternal love.
