Thought for the week from the Rev David Jones (we 3rd June 2012)
There was a carnival atmosphere as the Olympic torch made its way through Llanelli last Sunday.
Making its way from the south to the north for three days it travelled the roads of Wales and instilled great excitement and enthusiasm on the way.
There were celebrations and evening concerts as the torch brought the spirit of the Olympics close to the majority of the people of Wales and the United Kingdom. It was also a great privilege for those chosen to carry the torch. From celebrities to those nominated by their communities for their sporting or community service, young and old alike held the torch high an experience they will never forget.
There will, no doubt come a time when will ask ourselves as to whether we did our best when entrusted with some task or responsibility.
Did we just bask in the glory of having been asked or chosen?- or did we give of our best, keeping our resolve firm and with our eyes always on the ball. Jesus calls us to the greatest task of all – to love God and our neighbour as we love ourselves.
We cannot respond grudgingly to this call – but joyously, going that extra mile and holding the torch of God’s love high. Then we will arrive at the end of our journey knowing that we gave of our best and that’s the best prize of all.
