Thought for the week from the Rev David Jones (we 10th June 2012)
There’s no doubt that Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee really gripped the nation.
The flotilla on the Thames was an impressive sight and the concert on Monday brought together artistes from every decade of the Queen’s reign. Beacons were lit all over the country and the commonwealth to celebrate this remarkable anniversary of sixty years of untiring service.
In times when we have been so disillusioned by the egotism and greed of some politicians the Queen remains the best example of integrity and service by keeping faithfully the solemn vow made on her accession to the throne ‘That her whole life whether short or long would be devoted to the service of the people’.
Our lives are certainly not as documented but we all have our own stories to tell. There have been times along the way when we too have celebrated occasions such as anniversaries and special birthdays. Looking back with family and friends in gratitude and thanksgiving as we have recalled the good times while maybe at the same time knowing that heartfelt sadness because those we loved the most may no longer be with us.
It is then we need to know that God keeps his promises because he is full of compassion and love. Life may be tough, people may let us down but God is faithful and for that we can truly give thanks and celebrate!
