Yellow bird’s nest gets a helping hand from Coleg Sir Gâr students
Simeon Jones, MCP Ranger
Students studying for the Welsh Baccalaureate spent 3 days in early spring sunshine in March carrying out practical conservation management tasks in the Millennium Coastal Park. One of the tasks that they helped with was to create suitable habitat for the rare plant, yellow bird’s nest (Monotropa hypotitys; cytwf in Welsh) in Burry Port Woodlands.
The students were shown a picture of the plant which flowers in June and ecology of yellow bird’s-nest was discussed. It is parasitic on the roots of grey willow (Salix cinerea) but interestingly a fungus is also involved – girdled knight (Tricholoma cingulatum). The tree provides carbon to the fungus and plant and gets minerals in return from the fungus. It has also recently been found that the fungus may show more vigorous growth in the presence of yellow bird’s nest, hence it may not be all one way! However, yellow bird’s nest will only grow in the presence of the fungus hence it is important to safeguard this rare plant along with the fungus.
Recent work has been undertaken with funding from Better Woodlands for Wales to create coups in the wood to provide a more uneven age structure in the woodland. Over time the presence of Tricholoma seems to decline for some reason hence it is important to conserve this fungus in the woodland and hence the yellow bird’s nest. It is thought that the fungus is associated with younger Salix growth, hence the coups should help as young Salix naturally regenerates.
To help this process the students removed some of the carpet of ivy covering the coups. This should also encourage other woodland flowers to develop. Once this had been achieved shoots of Salix were planted in the coups to kick start the regeneration.
This former industrial site is an example of how Nature can soon regain its foothold to provide a high- quality aesthetic landscape. However these sites need to be looked after and managed appropriately and thanks are extended to the students, Mencap, Keep Wales Tidy and Tidy Towns who all contributed to the work.
Cytwf yn cael help llaw gan fyfyrwyr Coleg Sir Gâr
Simeon Jones, MCP Ranger
Treuliodd myfyrwyr sy’n dilyn cwrs Bagloriaeth Cymru 3 diwrnod yn heulwen y gwanwyn cynnar ym mis Mawrth yn gwneud tasgau cadwraeth ymarferol ym Mharc Arfordirol y Mileniwm. Un o’r tasgau hynny oedd helpu i greu cynefin addas i blanhigyn prin iawn, sef cytwf (Monotropa hypotitys), yng Nghoetir Porth Tywyn.
Dangoswyd llun i’r myfyrwyr o’r planhigyn hynod hwn, sy’n blodeuo ym mis Mehefin, a thrafodwyd ei ecoleg. Planhigyn parasitig yw cytwf sy’n tyfu ar wreiddiau helyg llwyd (Salix cinerea) ond yn ddiddorol ddigon mae ffwng, sef (Tricholoma cingulatum), yn gysylltiedig hefyd â hyn. Mae’r ffwng a’r planhigyn yn cael carbon gan y goeden, ac mae’r goeden yn ei thro yn cael mwynau gan y ffwng. Hefyd gwelwyd yn ddiweddar fod posibilrwydd fod y ffwng yn tyfu’n gryfach yng ngŵydd cytwf, felly mae’n bosibl nad yw perthynas y naill â’r llall yn gwbl unffordd! Fodd bynnag, ni thyf cytwf heb fod yng ngŵydd y ffwng felly mae’n bwysig diogelu’r planhigyn prin hwn ochr yn ochr â’r ffwng.
Gwnaed gwaith yn ddiweddar, a hynny yn sgil cael cyllid gan Goetiroedd Gwell i Gymru, er mwyn creu llecynnau wedi eu clirio fan hyn fan draw yn y coetir, gyda golwg ar sicrhau bod strwythur oedran mwy anwastad yn y coetir. Ymddengys bod presenoldeb Tricholoma yn lleihau dros gyfnod am ryw reswm neu’i gilydd, felly mae’n bwysig gwarchod y ffwng hwn yn y coetir a thrwy hynny warchod cytwf. Credir bod y ffwng yn gysylltiedig â thwf helyg ifanc, felly dylai’r gwaith a wnaed yn y coetir fod o gymorth wrth i’r helyg aildyfu’n naturiol.
Er mwyn rhoi hwb i’r broses hon bu’r myfyrwyr yn gwaredu rhywfaint o’r iorwg oedd yn drwch yn y llecynnau hynny. Hefyd dylai’r gwaith fod o fudd i flodau eraill sy’n tyfu mewn coetiroedd. Ar ôl cwblhau’r gwaith hwnnw plannwyd gwiail helyg yn y llecynnau er mwyn rhoi hwb i’r aildyfiant.
Mae’r hen safle diwydiannol hwn yn enghraifft o sut y gall natur ailfeddiannu darn o dir ymhen dim o dro gan roi bod i dirwedd sy’n werth ei gweld. Fodd bynnag mae’n rhaid gofalu am safleoedd o’r fath a’u rheoli mewn modd priodol, a mawr yw’r diolch i’r myfyrwyr, Mencap, Cadwch Gymru’n Daclus, a Threfi Taclus am gyfrannu at y gwaith.
