Man fined for dropping litter
A MAN has been fined £75 for dropping a plastic bottle in Llanelli town centre.
Council environmental enforcement officers were on patrol in the town centre at the time of the offence.
The man was issued with a fixed penalty notice and if he fails to pay it within the specified time, he could be prosecuted in the magistrates court where the maximum fine is £2,500.
The council now hopes this fine will act as a warning to others.
Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “Dropping litter is against the law. Not only does it spoil the appearance of an area but it can cause pollution and harm to wildlife.
“Enforcement officers carry out regular patrols across the county and anyone caught dropping litter will be fined. The council is determined to improve the quality of the environment for both residents and visitors.”
On average 40 tonnes of litter is removed in Carmarthenshire every week at a cost of over £2.2 million per year.
