Final curtain comes down on Theatr Elli
By Jonathan Williams
The final curtain will come down tonight for Theatr Elli as it holds its last performance.
The iconic building which has thrilled theatre and cinema goers for many years faces an uncertain future due to the opening of the new Cinema and The Works project.
However, it will receive a great final farewell as local theatre groups join forces to promote local talent and give one last fitting performance.
Tonight will be the final night that lucky theatre goers will be entertained in Theatr Elli by the likes of Curtain Up, Friendship Theatre, Llanelli Little Theatre, Llanelli Musical Players, Lori’s Stage & Dance School, Llanelli Youth Theatre, SA15 Theatre Company and The Academy.
Carmarthenshire Theatres have said on Facebook:
“We would like to thank you all for supporting us through the years.”
“For those who are lucky enough to have got a ticket for this evening, it will be an emotional and enjoyable night as we say farewell to Theatr Elli.”
As for the future of the building, a council spokesman said:
“The building will remain in use providing cinema screenings throughout this year’s school summer holiday period, following which the authority will be seeking alternative uses. We are fully aware of the listed features of the building as part of these deliberations.”
There won’t be a dry eye in the house at the end of this performance and let’s hope that there won’t be more if no future is found for one of Llanelli’s last iconic buildings.
