Primary Schools step into the Olympic Spirit
Over 130 primary school pupils put their best foot forward for a performance of dance held at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig campus.Â
The Olympic Games formed the theme of the show in a performance entitled Olympia, which was organised by the college’s dance department.
The department has been working in five of Llanelli’s primary schools for six weeks, delivering dance creativity within the school curriculum.
“We’ve been trying to provide more of an artisitic stimulus to inspire both children and teachers to develop their dance skills and develop opportunities within the school,” said dance lecturer, Claire MacKerras, who managed the project and organised the evening where children performed dance routines based on the different countries competing at the games.Â
Olympia is a culmination of the partnership work between the schools and the college and a project funded by Physical Education and Schools Sport (PESS), which aims to raise standards in physical education by developing young people’s physical skills.Â
Claire MacKerras, who’s currently running a dance summer school at the college, added: “We’ve enjoyed working on this project which has established a working link with the primary schools in the area which we hope to continue.”
