Signal Box concerns update

Following on from our previous article on the upgrading of the signals around Llanelli Railway Station and removal of the Signal Box, we thought that we should ask Robin Basu the Community Relations manager for Network Rail what would happen if the system failed for any reason and what would become of the box.

He said:

“With regards to your query in the signal box going down, Port Talbot PSB has a diesel back up generator which will automatically operate during a power outage.”

“The crossings themselves will be powered from the 650V signalling distribution supply, fed from the PSP at Llanelli which is also generator backed up. The crossings will also be fitted as standard with battery back up which can keep the crossings operating for 12 hours during the unlikely event of a total 650V power supply failure.”

“Finally, I can confirm that we will be demolishing the signal box itself, this is currently planned to take place in January.”

However, one resident and community volunteer who’s fears haven’t been calmed is Joanne Yeo.  She told us that:

“As a resident, I think they’re gambling with our lives and am very concerned with their proposals.”

“What happens if there is a failure? Who will take responsibility? Where is the open, transparant consultation with the community?”

Network Rail are planning an Awareness Event for Tuesday 14th August.
