Thought for the week from the Rev David Jones (we 19th August 2012)
We were all so disappointed for Dai Greene that his dream of winning a medal at the Olympics was just out of reach.
Dai has consistently shown such a high level of sportsmanship and is to be greatly admired. Hopefully he will now have time to rest and to continue to follow his athletic career knowing that he has gained the respect and esteem of us all and that as a community we are immensely proud of his achievements.
There have, of course, been extremes both of elation and disappointment as medals have been won and lost. As the Olympic flame is extinguished however the spirit of mutual respect and sporting excellence we have seen from all the athletes will be long remembered. All who have taken part are winners because they have upheld those principles and we who have been part of the multimillion TV audiences have had a wonderful time.
The Epistle to the Hebrews compares the Christians life with running a race. The author doesn’t speak of winning because that’s taken for granted. All will be among the winners because having gained Christ all the rewards faith are theirs.. In the race of faith God calls us to join in, leave our doubts and uncertainties behind and so to allow him to reveal more and more of his will for our lives along the way. Then the flame of faith and love for God will increase and we will know the joy of having gained the prize of life both now and forever.
