Environment Agency warns of possible flooding as heavy rain forecast across Wales

Environment Agency Wales is advising people to be prepared as forecasters are predicting heavy spells of rain across most parts of Wales tomorrow afternoon and evening (Friday 17 August).

Persistent rain will fall this evening (Thursday) but of more concern is a band of particularly heavy rain forecast for the following day.

There could be locally intense downpours as approximately three inches (60mm) of rain could fall in a short period of time.

There is a risk that this could lead to excess surface water on roads and flooding of drains and small streams. There may also be some flooding of fields and low-lying land.

Whilst the majority of rivers should not reach levels of concern, smaller rivers that respond quickly to rainfall could rise quickly and cause flooding.

Officers will be monitoring the situation closely overnight and will take action as necessary to clear blockages from Agency trash screens to reduce the risk of flooding for people.

People are also urged to take extra care as driving conditions are likely to be particularly hazardous.

A spokesperson for Environment Agency Wales said:

“The recent rain has meant that the ground is saturated and rivers could respond to this latest band of rain. What is of more concern is the particularly heavy shower forecast for Friday which could cause disruption and flooding problems.

“During the afternoon as people start thinking of heading home from work or travelling to festivals or on holiday, driving conditions could be hazardous and there may well be flooding on the roads.

“We strongly advise people not to try and walk through or drive through any flooding as it only takes a few inches of fast flowing water for people and cars to get swept away.”
