Charity seeks help with volunteer support

A charity is raising funds in Carmarthenshire to help home cats and kittens.

The Carmarthenshire division of the national charity Cats Protection is a brand new branch and is currently fundraising to try and boost its bank balance to start work in the county. It’s also appealing for foster homes to help them get started.

“As a fundraising branch, we’re not able to start doing any homing work until we raise enough funds to become operational and we have foster support in place,” said branch co-ordinator Patrick Willey. “We’re hoping that the public will support our fundraising work to enable us to become active in the area where we’ll be rehoming and neutering cats and kittens.

“It’s great that Cats Protection has identified our local area to support a new branch to help tackle the issues. Soon we’ll be able to work alongside existing charities which are already under pressure.”

The branch, consisting of a small team of unpaid volunteers has no headquarters and will rely on foster carers to help with the transition of rehoming cats but more volunteers are needed. Carl Gower, assistant coordinator, added: “We’re desperate to build up a register of foster homes and we need volunteers to fill various administration posts such as branch secretary.”

Unwanted kittens and cats are a growing problem leading to many charities becoming overwhelmed, running over-capacity and having to operate waiting lists.
