Family Learning in Carmarthenshire

Parents in Carmarthenshire are being offered help to support their children’s education.

A Family Programmes team is offering free classes aimed at improving literacy and numeracy, and helping parents understand the teaching methods used in schools.

They also provide courses on English for speakers of other languages, and an introduction to Welsh.

The short courses can include parents only, or with their children so that families can learn together.

Hundreds of people attend the sessions every year, which are delivered in schools and communities. Child care can be provided for those who need it.

Basic Skills Tutor Beverley Williams said: “We hope that by improving the skills of parents, which in turn will help improve their children’s skills, through motivation, encouragement and help at home.

“Children can also learn with their parents, and help build skills and confidence. The learning environment is informal, relaxed and fun.”

The courses take place across Carmarthenshire wherever there is demand. Tutors contact early years or primary schools to offer the service. They will also hold courses in the community if wanted.

There is an opportunity to gain qualifications if wanted, or to have advice about further education.

Beverley added: “The courses have been really successful, and we’ve had very positive feedback. There is no pressure on anyone and if people want to just come along for one session to give it a try that’s fine.”
