Burry Port lifeboat’s island rescue

At 4:20 pm on Saturday 15 September 2012 the volunteers at the RNLI’s station launched to assist two persons cut off by the incoming tide on Burry Holms, Rhossili Bay.

As often happens on sunny afternoons visitors to Rhossili Bay venture onto Burry Holms at low water not realising that the Holms becomes an island two and a half hours before high water. This was the case on this occasion when two visitors, one from Cardiff the other from Newport, Monmouthshire, walked onto Burry Holms earlier in the afternoon.

When it was time to return to the beach found their way cut off by the incoming tide. Fortunately they did not attempt to wade or swim across but remained on the island but dialed 999 using their mobile phone to call Swansea Coastguard for help.

The station was then requested to launch the Atlantic 75 Dorothy Selina to assist the two and return them to Rhossili Beach and to safety and into the care of Rhossili Coastguard.

The Atlantic 75 was crewed by Owain Davies, Robert Davies and Andrew Williams.
