Nick Clegg’s apology for not keeping his pledge never the raise student tuition fees has had a mixed response.
The outrage and dismay that followed saw his party’s membership decline and now leading up to to the Lib Dem’s conference at Brighton it seems he is trying to build bridges and to restore his party’s popularity which has according to the latest opinion polls is at an all time low.
Whether the apology will be enough to restore the popularity he enjoyed before the last election will have to be seen. Then again the apology has come and that in itself may well be the beginning of the way back.
The assurance that comes from faith is that that the past is the past. Raking up regrets are always counterproductive because unresolved remorse and guilt can have a serious effect on our lives. The Bible tells us that when God forgives it is total with no reference to whatever happened before.
When we believe this we can deal with the past, seek the forgiveness of those we may have treated unfairly and by God’s grace to be more sensitive and caring in the future.
In the words of Jesus ‘Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us’ – and that’s the best way of all.
