Llanelli will play host to the National Eisteddfod when it visits Carmarthenshire in August 2014. The announcement came after months of discussions between the Eisteddfod and the local council. This is the first time for the festival to be held in the county for fourteen years.

Councillor Kevin Madge, Leader of Carmarthenshire County Council, said, “We are delighted to announce that Carmarthenshire will be welcoming the Eisteddfod in two years’ time. The Eisteddfod’s visit will be a great boost for the whole county, not only during the week itself but during the period leading up to festival week in August 2014. These are exciting times for Llanelli, with Theatr y Ffwrnes and the Eastgate development opening soon. The Eisteddfod visit will be the icing on the cake.

“The 2000 Eisteddfod in Llanelli was a week to remember, and I hope that the 2014 festival will be warmly welcomed by all our residents across the county. We are looking forward to working closely with Eisteddfod officers and local volunteers over the next few months, organising a successful and vibrant festival, which will attract visitors from all over Wales and beyond to the county..”

Eisteddfod Chief Executive, Elfed Roberts, added, “We are looking forward to returning to Carmarthenshire in 2014. The area has always been a great supporter of the festival, and has had a strong relationship with us for many generations. .

“We look forward to beginning the work preparing for the Eisteddfod locally, and the process will start with a public meeting in the area on 8 November. Following this meeting, we’ll start electing officers and the local committees will be set-up across the county. I hope that these committees will be in place well before Christmas.”

The Eisteddfod Maes is situated at the Festival Fields, Millennium Coastal Park, Llanelli, and the Eisteddfod will also be using the new theatre at Y Ffwrnes and draw the town centre into the festival.

The public meeting will be held at Ysgol y Strade, Llanelli at 19.00 on Thursday 8 November, and there is a warm welcome for anyone wanting to find out more about the Eisteddfod’s visit in August 2014. For more information on the National Eisteddfod go to www.eisteddfod.org.uk.
