Officers from Environment Agency Wales are investigating following a road traffic accident on the A482 near Lampeter, involving a lorry which has spilled its contents into the Nant Creuddyn.
The lorry was carrying the food additive liquid caramel, and it is believed that between 4-6,000 litres of the liquid may have entered the river, which is a tributary of the Afon Teifi.
Agency officers have visited the site and are continuing to monitor conditions in the Nant Creuddyn.
So far, officers have reported no signs of any fish in distress, but there is a strong discoloration of the water which will be visible to local people.
A spokesperson from Environment Agency Wales said:
“Although the food additive is not toxic in itself, it can affect oxygen levels in water which could have a negative impact on the fish population.
“The current high river flows are helping to disperse the liquid quickly, but we will continue to keep a close eye on the situation and will do everything we can to limit the impact of this accident on the local environment.”
