At 2:30 pm on Wednesday 10 October 2012 the volunteers at the RNLI’s station at Burry Port launched to assist a fishing boat out of fuel at the western end of Cefn Sidan Beach, Carmarthen Bay.
The fishing boat with one person, from Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, on board had left Tenby earlier in the day to return to Burry Port. Due to poor visibility had got disoriented and had used all its fuel going round in circles.
When the engine finally stopped the owner called Milford Haven Coastguard. The range safety boat Interceptor was in the area and was able to inform the coastguard the exact location of the casualty. The Interceptor was unable to tow the casualty back to Burry Port due to the state of the tide.
Milford Haven Coastguard requested the launch of Burry Port lifeboat. It was decided to launch the station’s Atlantic 75, Dorothy Selina, as the casualty was eight miles away from the station and with the falling tide time was of the essence.
On arrival at the casualty the crew of the lifeboat rigged a tow and brought the casualty vessel and its owner back to its berth at Burry Port. The Atlantic was back at the station at 3:45 pm.
The lifeboat was crewed by Lee Howells, Julian Aston and Nick Jones.
