Welsh Songsters Just Love to Sing

Llanelliā€™s young songsters, the Hywel Girlsā€™ Choir & Hywel Boy Singers, are busy preparing for a an exciting Winter season of performances which includes a radio broadcast, local charity performances, away performances in Cardiff and Swansea, the Yehudi Menuhin Concert Hall and a performance with Only Boys Aloud.

Radio Broadcast

This week sees a 1-hour radio programme recorded in Surrey all about the work and great achievements of the choir. The radio broadcast which will be aired in coming weeks will also include the young choristers sing a mix of Welsh favourites such as Y Delyn Aur, Y Mae Afon, Scottish and English folk music, songs in both Russian and Hebrew, Broadway favourites from The Sound of Music as well as excepts from Benjamin Brittenā€™s Ceremony of Carols.

ā€œItā€™s a thrill for the choristers to have such a varied programme of eventsā€, explains founder and Director of Music John Hywel Williams. ā€œItā€™s all about learning, development, experience and of course a good sprinkling of fun!ā€

Noson Lawen

The choir will star in a charity Noson Lawen, hosted by Mynydd Mawr Male Choir at Cross Hands Public Hall this Saturday 13th October in aid of Special Care Baby Units at Glangwili Hospital and the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Late October will see the Hywel choristers travel to Rhymney to join the Rhymney Male Choir for a Gala Concert on Saturday 27th October.

Christmas Performances

The Christmas Season will enjoy a giant musical welcome when the Hywel Choir hold their Annual Christmas Concert ā€œThe Magic of Christmasā€ which this year will see 200 voices and musicians unite from the Hywel Choir, Llanelli Choral Society, Burry Port Male Choir and Burry Port Town Band on Saturday 8th December at the grand setting of Llanelliā€™s Tabernacle Chapel.

The Hywel Choir will give their final Christmas performance as guest stars at the Swanseaā€™s magnificent Brangwyn Hall with the acclaimed Dunvant Male Choir on Friday 21st December.

New Year Performances

In the New Year, the Hywel choristers will join Only Boys Aloud at Llanelliā€™s new theatre Y Ffwrnes. Other forthcoming performances will include performances at The Yehudi Menuhin Concert Hall of the Internationally renowned Yehudi Menuhin School, the St. Davidā€™s Day Concert of the London Welsh with BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, performances in the Midlands, a charity performance for Cefn Sidan Rotary as well as the choirā€™s Annual Concert… the ever popular Llanelli Proms.

Choral Workshop

The choir will hold an open choral workshop on Sunday 25 November at Glenalla Civic Hall, Llanelli titled ā€œSinging: From Science to Stardomā€ where friends, families and interested choristers are welcome to attend. The workshop will look at the science of singing mixed with exercises for improved singing technique.ā€

Love to Sing? Join us!

During this season, the opportunity exists for new choristers (age 7-16 years) to join. The choir prides itself on its open community philosophy and there are no auditions to join.
