Recycle for Carmarthenshire – the County council’s interactive website to help people reduce and recycle their rubbish – has won gold at the CIPR Wales PRide Awards 2012.

The website www.recycleforcarmarthenshire.com won Best Digital Campaign at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations awards, which recognises excellence in public relations and communications.

A panel of judges, made up of PR industry experts, said the website was a useful tool for residents with smart features and strong outcomes.

The website was launched earlier this year to help residents to recycle and reduce their rubbish.

It is packed full of information, news and advice as well as quick links to order more blue bags; request a replacement green bin or find your nearest recycling centre.

There is information on all of the council’s waste services as well as advice on real nappies, home composting and reducing your food waste.

The Greenies and Meanies – the 3D characters made out of everyday rubbish such as paper, cans and bottles – are also featured and with four online games to play, the website is fun, educational and interactive.

New internet technologies, such as QR codes, have been used to promote the website and make access easier.

Users can go straight to the website, or access it directly from the council’s main website.

CIPR judges said: “www.recycleforcarmarthenshire.com is a useful tool for the residents in the Carmarthenshire area. The objective was clear, and the QR code was a smart way of promoting the URL. Including it on their own corporate website clearly worked, with residents being directed to the new site. With strong outcomes and a successful product this is a brilliant campaign.”

Carmarthenshire is currently recycling approximately 49% of its waste but must achieve a 52% recycling target by the end of 2012/13 and 70% by 2025.

Executive Board Member for Street Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “With strict recycling and landfill targets to meet, it is more important than ever that we encourage residents to minimise their waste and recycle as much as possible.

“This website makes it easier for residents to get the information they need, when it is most convenient for them, and I am thrilled that it has had the recognition it deserves.”
