With less than a week to go before the American Presidential election it’s going to be a tight race.
The polls have been fluctuating narrowly between both President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney for some time, and the next few days may well be decisive in deciding who will eventually cross the winning line. With continuing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and uncertainty as to what’s going to happen in Syria and Iran and with continuing problems on the economy on the home front whoever gets to the White house will have their work cut out.
Much, of course, will be expected of whoever wins. Promises made in the election campaign will be carefully scrutinised and quick condemnation will follow if they are not kept. There will be domestic problems to deal with the constant threat of terrorism is never far away.
It was Harry S Truman who said of the presidency that the ‘buck stops here’ and that can be a very lonely place for whoever is elected.
The Bible teaches us that we must respect those chosen to lead when they do with honesty, integrity and with a deep concern for the good of all. Perhaps this week we can, despite our political differences just give thought and even pray for those who we elect to high office and have to make long affecting decisions on our behalf.
That they may know the council and wisdom of God so much so that the place where Mr Truman said the buck stops may not be such lonely a place after all.
