New Project to Reduce Flood Risk in Llechryd

Environment Agency Wales will start work this week on a new project to reduce flood risk for 18 properties in Llechryd, Ceredigion.

This will involve building a ‘tree catcher’ in the River Teifi to stop trees and debris from getting lodged under the bridge at Llechryd.

The 17th Century listed stone bridge has been prone to blockages from trees and debris in the past, which can restrict river flows during heavy rainfall and cause flooding.

This has often led to both the road and the bridge being closed during flooding until the debris can be removed safely from the bridge.

In addition to installing the tree catcher, the Agency will also be providing a number of householders with purpose made temporary flood barriers which they can easily slot into doorways when there is a risk of flooding.

During the works, the Agency will do its best to minimise disruption to local people.

The overall scheme will cost £193,000 and has been funded by the Welsh Government.

It is due to be completed by the end of the year.

Keri Thomas, from Environment Agency Wales said:

“This project will not only reduce the risk of flooding from the River Teifi, but it is also providing local people with the right tools to protect themselves should a flood happen.

“We can’t always prevent flooding from happening, but schemes like this can help reduce the chances of it happening in the future.”
