It hardly seems forty years since Llanelli beat the ‘All blacks’.
What an unforgettable game that was Max Boyce’s’ claim that ‘I was there’ was sadly not my experience. I was working at Austin Rover at that time and we had the afternoon off to go to the match.
At the last moment I had to travel to Gloucester to pick up a part that was needed for a broken press which had to be on line for the following day. By the time I got back Llanelli was bursting with celebration and the rest is history.
This week we remember the ultimate sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the liberty and freedom we have today.
Most of us were not there – but we have heard of their sacrifice. So many never returned home, comrades who did return will especially remember and with pride and sadness pay their respects of honour. It hardly seems thirty years since my good friend Mark Thomas lost his life on the Sir Galahad at the height of the Falklands conflict.
Since then our community have lost young men in Iran and Afghanistan. Their memories too are precious and their sacrifice will never be forgotten. We were not there; they were and died in the flower of their years. This Sunday in the churches and chapels in cities, towns and villages we will remember their sacrifice.
‘They shall grow not old as we who are left grow old, age shall not weary them or the years condemn, at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them’
