Fire crews from Llanelli attended a flat fire on Tuesday (6th November) which started as the result of a cigarette.

The occupier fell asleep on the sofa with the cigarette still alight. It fell on to a pile of newspapers, which subsequently ignited the curtains. The fire was contained to the front room.

The smoke alarm was activated which woke the occupiers partner, who was able to evacuate them from the property. Both occupants received oxygen therapy for smoke inhalation and were conveyed to hospital.

Deputy Head of Community Safety, Mick Higgins said, “This is an ideal example of why you should have a working smoke alarm in your property. Without one, this fire could have had fatal consequences for two people”.
