YOUNG entrepreneurs from Carmarthenshire’s schools have been competing for support to promote their business ideas.

The finals of Dragon’s Den took place at Halliwell, Trinity St David, Carmarthen, on Tuesday and was won by the Eco Chic team from Amman Valley Comprehensive and their recycle bags.

The competition is a partnership between Carmarthenshire County Council and Careers Wales and featured teams from Amman Valley Comprehensive, Ysgol Maesyryrfa, Coleg Sir Gar Gelli Aur, Ysgol Bro Myrddin, and QE High School. The judges were Shaun Pinney of graphic designers Shaun Pinney Studios, Craig Masters of Carmarthenshire County Council’s regeneration department, and Barry Hale, of the council and Dewis Menter.

Mr Pinney told the students that everyone had done a very good job and thought outside the box.

The judges has taken time to whittle down the entries and two big ideas were the White Water Milkshake by the Coleg Sir Gar Gelli Aur team and the Black Current electrical energy saving scheme by Amman Valley Comprehensive.

He added: “We had to look at all the entries to see which business plan we thought we would get our money back from. As business people we have to think like that.”

Mr Masters said: “The reason we chose Eco Chic as a winner was, the product – great, thinking about a lot of environmental issues. There is potential for working with big supermarkets or local supermarkets. It is practical stuff with a lot of possibilities. It is a shopping bag and sports bag suitable for swimming etc.”

He added that White Water and Black Current would need a lot more investment but Eco Chic could be making money quite quickly.
