Thought for the week (we 18th November 2012)

For the first time ever we will, this week elect police commissioners who will be accountable for how crime is tackled in their police force area. This extends even further the arm of democracy and gives us the people a say in such important appointments.

Following a close run campaign President Barak Obama was re-elected for another term and even though little has changed politically in the USA as far as the Senate and House of representatives are concerned the people have spoken.

Compared with the re-election of the leadership in China where such decisions are the privilege only of the few we must never take our freedoms and democracy for granted and exercise our gift to vote at every opportunity.

The Bible has much to say about those who rule and govern. The prophets of the Old Testament did not spare words of condemnation towards those who ruled unjustly.

When asked a question about paying taxes Jesus answered by saying ‘Give to Caesar that which is Caesar’s and give to God that which is God’s’ In other words be good citizens never forgetting that we are also to give allegiance to the principles of the kingdom of God – the greatest of which is to love God and to love our neighbour.

There is no greater council for those who seek to lead and govern than that which the word of God gives and the command Jesus gave to his disciples “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ surely says it all!
