Environment Agency Wales is warning people to remain on their guard against flooding as forecasts indicate that more heavy rainfall is forecast across Wales over the weekend.

Conditions may have improved today, but further bands of persistent rainfall, along with strong winds, are forecast from tomorrow, continuing into next week.

Saturday afternoon through to Sunday morning is the main area of concern as a low pressure system moves through bringing heavy rain to all parts of Wales.

Yesterday’s rainfall led to widespread disruption across the country.

As the ground is still saturated, further rainfall is likely to cause more travel problems and localised flooding.

River levels remain high and more rain is likely to lead to more Flood Alerts and possibly Flood Warnings being issued across the country.

Officers from Environment Agency Wales have been working around the clock the keep rivers and streams clear of debris and blockages.

The Agency issued Flood Warnings to almost 370 properties in the north and west Wales about the risk to their homes.

Officers have been assisting councils across the country to respond to incidents flooding.

Officers are monitoring conditions closely, and will continue to clear watercourses and check flood defences throughout the weekend.

The Agency is reminding people about the dangers of flood water. Only a few inches of flood water can knock a person off their feet, and two feet of water can float a car.

Flood water can hide hidden dangers, and under no circumstances should people attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

Graham Hillier, flood risk manager for Environment Agency Wales said:

“We understand that this must be a very difficult time for those who have already been affected by flooding. For those affected, we have information and support on our website that could help them on what to do next.

“We’re asking people today to remain alert and to prepare for the risk of further flooding over the weekend.

“There are lots of things people can do to prepare for flooding, including signing up for free flood warnings, and preparing personal flood plans and flood kits which they can use in emergencies.”
