Customers and businesses are both benefiting from the work carried out by officers from Carmarthenshire County Council’s Public Protection Division to ensure food safety.

Officers have recently inspected two premises doing well during the recession and gave them a clean bill of health.

Cnwd food production factory at Cross Hands Business Park and the Angel Vaults restaurant at Notts Square, Carmarthen, have co-worked with the Food Safety Team of Public Health Services at Carmarthenshire County Council to ensure compliance with food safety law and are operating a successful business during the current difficult economic times.

Cnwd, which is owned by a dynamic young enterprising couple, has obtained an Approval to produce and sell smoked trout, sewin, farmhouse terrine and chicken liver parfait throughout the UK and the EU .

Their high quality products are being sold in famous premises such as Fortnum and Mason.

Owners Scott Davies and Kirsty Manning contacted the department from the start and this ensured a high standard of compliance with food safety legislation.

Following closure some 18 months ago, the Angel Vaults has reopened under new management.

The Angel Vaults has been renovated with regular liaison with the Food Safety Team and resulted in an excellent Food Hygiene Rating Scheme score of 5, following a routine food safety inspection carried out by an Environmental Health Practitioner.

Angel Vaults general manager Jane Haile said: “Being awarded the highest score of 5 is very important to us.”

Senior Environmental Health Practitioner Lon John said: “The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme provides confidence for consumers and enables them to make an informed choice on where to eat. It also promotes good business, because food business operators can demonstrate a high standard of food safety.”

The council’s executive board member for public protection Cllr Jim Jones said: “The work of the Food Safety Team is of vital importance to the County and I’m pleased that these businesses have seen the benefits of that work and come out with such good ratings.

“The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is being implemented throughout Carmarthenshire and is having positive results.”
